The Irish picture

Irish businesses have strong late payment rights. Most choose not to use them.

The law gives suppliers real protection when another business pays late. In practice, most SMEs keep those rights in reserve and rely on following up, because the customer relationship matters more than the penalty.

Current law

What the rules provide

  • A business can be automatically entitled to interest when another business pays late, without sending a reminder, plus compensation for recovery costs.
  • The statutory rate is 8 percentage points above the ECB reference rate: 10.4% a year from 1 July 2026.
  • Between businesses, payment terms longer than 60 days must be expressly agreed and must not be grossly unfair to the supplier.

In practice
82%

of SMEs surveyed by ISME do not charge interest on late payments.

13%said they are afraid to charge, in case they lose custom

So in Ireland, getting paid is mostly about steady, well-judged follow-up. Whether to claim interest stays your decision. Steinfin does not add interest or charges to your invoices.

Behind every invoice

When getting paid becomes an operating job.

Some invoices are paid on time and need nothing. The rest turn into small jobs: confirm it arrived, wait for approval, remind, log the promise, answer the query, check the bank, follow up again. Multiply that by every invoice you raise and it becomes a function of its own.

  2. Payment termsFor example, 30 days

An unpaid invoice

What happens when a customer does not pay on time?

"Unpaid" can mean six different things, and each needs a different next action. Chasing them all the same way is how relationships get strained and invoices stay open.

What Steinfin handles

Start from the problem, not the service name.

Irish businesses rarely arrive asking for "accounts receivable outsourcing". They arrive because something specific is not working. Find yours, and see how Steinfin handles it.

Not sure? The free AR health check will tell you where to start.

Why Irish businesses outsource it

AR work ends up spread across people who have other jobs.

99.8% of active enterprises in Ireland are SMEs, and in many of them credit control is one task among several. As the business grows, the follow-up grows with it, and it lands wherever there is a gap.

CSO, Business in Ireland 2023, 401,359 active enterprises. Published December 2025.

Another hire, or a managed service?

Neither is always the cheaper option. It depends on your volume, your team and how steady the work is.

Your customers

Professional follow-up, built around how your business already works.

Many Irish SMEs hold back on chasing because they do not want to damage a good relationship. Steinfin follows rules you set for each kind of customer, so follow-up is consistent without being blunt.

  • Tone and wording agreed with you first
  • Sensitive accounts handled differently, or only as you instruct
  • Customer context noted and respected
  • Commercial decisions stay with you

Reporting

A clear picture, without running the follow-up yourself.

Regular updates show where each account stands, what customers have said, which promises are due, which queries are open and what needs your input next.

Every plan includes regular reporting. On Starter, that is a weekly report.

Two jobs that often come first

Knowing what was paid, and what is really owed.

Matching payments to invoices

Cash collection gets the customer to pay. Cash application works out what the money paid for, so nobody is chased for an invoice that is already settled.

Sorting out an older ledger

Some ledgers need organising before steady follow-up can start: old balances, unexplained payments and queries nobody wrote down. Cleanup sorts each item into what happens next.

Irish sectors

Where AR carries the most weight in Ireland.

These are sectors where businesses sell on credit terms, raise a lot of invoices or wait on approvals, so follow-up is real work rather than an occasional task.

How we work with Irish businesses

Remote by design, anywhere in Ireland.

Steinfin works with B2B businesses across Ireland remotely: by email, by phone and through the access you give us to your accounting system. Your customers hear from your business, wherever your office is.

Steinfin handles personal data in line with the GDPR. AR work involves customer and financial information, so access is limited to what the service needs and to the people working on your account. Your agreement with us is set out in your order form and our Service Terms.

This page is for businesses in the Republic of Ireland. Based in Northern Ireland? See Steinfin for UK businesses.

Questions

Credit control in Ireland, answered.

What accounts receivable services does Steinfin provide in Ireland?

Steinfin runs day-to-day credit control and accounts receivable work for B2B businesses in Ireland: reminders, follow-up by email and phone, promise and query tracking, payment matching, ledger cleanup and clear reporting. It is a managed service, so our people do the work, supported by our own systems.

Can Irish businesses outsource credit control without losing control?

Yes. You keep the commercial decisions: terms, concessions, credit notes, payment plans outside the agreed rules and any escalation. Steinfin handles the agreed routine follow-up and sends anything that needs your authority back to you.

Can Steinfin contact our customers for us?

Yes. Follow-up goes out in your business's name, using wording, tone and channels agreed with you before we start. Key or sensitive accounts can be handled differently, or only as you instruct.

Do we need to change our accounting software?

No. Steinfin works alongside the accounting system you already use, and nothing about how you raise invoices has to change.

Can Steinfin work alongside Xero, QuickBooks or Sage?

Yes. Steinfin works alongside Xero, QuickBooks and Sage. You give us authorised access from your own account, at the level you choose, or send us regular exports if you prefer. We never ask for your password.

How do you access our invoice information?

Usually through authorised access that you grant from your own accounting account and can remove at any time. If that does not suit you, you send regular exports of your outstanding invoices and we work from those.

Can Steinfin handle invoice queries?

Yes, from the Growth plan. We log each query, get the missing information, route anything commercial to you and keep following up until it is resolved. We do not give legal advice or handle legal disputes.

Can Steinfin help match customer payments?

Yes, as part of the Scale plan. We match payments to the right invoices using remittances and bank references, and flag short payments, overpayments and unidentified receipts for you. We never move money.

Does Steinfin charge late payment interest on our behalf?

No. Under the European Communities (Late Payment in Commercial Transactions) Regulations 2012, a business may be entitled to statutory interest and compensation for recovery costs when another business pays late. Whether to claim them is your decision. Steinfin does not add interest or charges to your invoices, and this is not legal advice.

How much does outsourced credit control cost in Ireland?

Plans are a monthly retainer in EUR. Starter starts from €349 a month and Growth from €699 a month, scaling with the size and state of your ledger. Scale is quoted once we understand your ledger. The pricing page sets out what each plan includes.

Is Steinfin a debt collection agency?

No. Steinfin provides credit control on your own business-to-business invoices, in your name and under your instructions. We do not buy debts, we do not work on consumer debts and we do not take legal action. You remain the owner of your invoices throughout.

Does Steinfin work with businesses outside Dublin?

Yes. Steinfin works remotely, by email, by phone and through the access you give us to your accounting system, so where your business is based in Ireland makes no difference to the service.

How do we start?

Start with the free AR health check. Tell us a little about your invoicing and we reply within one business day with an honest read on where payments are being held up. If it makes sense to work together, we agree the scope and your customer rules, set up access, and begin.

Consistent follow-up, without putting relationships at risk.
